You can also find forums, message boards and e-groups dedicated to public domain news and discussions. Check Internet directories or do a search for “public domain forum” (also: substitute group, list, board, news, or community for “forum”) and you’ll discover more information than you will need. Be sure to visit groups, lists and forums, before joining read through some of the posted messages and member profiles to determine whether the other people involved seem easy to talk with and open to new members with lots of questions. The Internet community is often a wonderfully supportive place to find people with similar interests, and most are willing to share the experiences they’ve gained.

RetroFilm -com: Provides a catalogue of public domain movies, television shows, cartoons, musicals, documentaries and more. The site serves television broadcast companies and does not provide copies of film footage for individuals, but it is a great place to find titles which you can then track down a copy of elsewhere.

Public Domain Report: The site of a monthly newsletter that reveals significant works as they enter the public domain. Each issue features selections and samples from a variety of medium, at least one new book, film, play, song, image, and children’s work are included every month, from well-known authors, artists and creators like Dorothy Parker and George Gershwin. A one-year subscription will set you back $395, but for those who don’t have the time or inclination to do extensive research themselves, it is an excellent source of fresh material.

Public Libraries

Libraries are an excellent and free resource for finding public domain material. Pick a subject that interests you and scan the shelves for older books relating to the topic, or spend an afternoon browsing through the card catalogue. Most of the time, the publication date is right near the beginning of the listing on the card, so identifying works published before 1923 is a simple matter.

Most librarians are quite knowledgeable about their library’s collections and are happy to help you find exactly what you’re looking for. If you’re planning a visit to the library, it’s advantageous to make up a list of questions regarding the object of your search and approach the librarian before you do anything else, particularly if you are going to a small local library. Larger state-run library and university library staff members may not have the time or resources to devote personal attention to every patron.

2011 AAP Sales Report for E-book And Downloadable Audio Books

According to the January 2011 sales report from the Association of American Publishers, the first month of the January illustrates that E-book net sale increased by 115.percent than the sales report of January 2010. Last year sales report was $32.4 Million and this has been increased to $69.9 million in revenue against a year ago.
The sales of Downloadable Audio Books have increased by 8.8 percent than the previous year sales, which is from $6.0 million to $6.5 million. The report even stated that full 2010 analysis, E-book sales have increased yearly and considerably in all 9 years of tracking the category.
Books on CD or tape were also down slightly, as were textbooks and academic books. Only religious books grew by 5.6 percent, from $49.8 million to $52.6million.
While, Adult Hardcover category reduced from $55.4million to $49.1 million, Adult Paperback dived from $104.2 million to $83.6 million and Adult Mass Market turn down from $56.4 million to $39.0 million.
In the Children’s or Young Adult category, the Hardcover sales for 2011 January was $31.2 million and where as in 2010 the sales report was $31.8 million. While, Paperbacks were down by 17.7 percent, in 2010 the sales were $30.9 million and now it is $25.4 million.
Higher Education group, the sales have slight dropped by 1.4 percent, in 2010 the sales report was $387.6 million and where as in 2011 the report is $382.0 million. At the same time the University Press Hardcovers sales has also been decreased by 14 percent compared to last year’s sales which were $4.5 million and this year it is $3.9 million and even the University Press Paperbacks have also tasted the decline taste from 6.7 million to 6.2 million; which is nearly 7.8 percent decrease.
However, in Professional and Scholarly Books the sales report has increased by 1.3 percent, in 2010 the sales report was $51.2 million and in 2011 the report stands at $51.8 million.

Publishing, relative to many other industries, has not enjoyed a high Return on Investment (ROI) for investors. Now publishers are much more focused on having every single book they publish be profitable. This means a more risk adverse philosophy, with a preference for publishing authors with successful track records–a sound business strategy.
Currently there are about 2000 chain bookstore locations. An additional 2200 independent booksellers belong to the American Booksellers Association. There are some 50,000 locations that sell books. Around 50% of books meant for retail sales are sold in bookstores, only about 10 -15% of new books are sold online.
Barnes and Noble is the largest chain with 796 stores. Annual revenues from those stores are $4.7 billion which translates into sales of almost 445 million books per year. A typical Barnes and Noble store offers 150,000 – 200,000 titles to shoppers.
Oddly enough Barnes and Noble is re-instituting the old fashioned idea that booksellers are also publishers. Its wholly owned company, Sterling Publishing, has the publishing or distribution rights to 10,000 titles and has actively published 5000. They own a chunk of IUniverse, a publish-on-demand company. The CEO of Barnes and Noble, Stephen Riggio, is the Chairman of the Board for IUniverse.
Borders Group owns about 1100 stores in the United States and has revenues of about $3.8 billion. It operates Borders Books and Music and Waldenbooks. The chain is the outgrowth of two independent bookstores. Walden Books was established by Lawrence Hoyt in 1962. Borders Books was established by Tom and Louis Borders in 1971. K-Mart Corporation purchased Walden Books, which in turn purchased Brentano’s Books in 1984. In 1991 K-mart purchased Borders Books and formed Borders-Walden Group and renamed it Borders Group, Inc. Borders Group Inc. then went public in 1995.
BooksAMillion was founded in 1917 as a news stand and has grown to 205 stores, primarily in the Southeast. They own a book distribution company, American Wholesale Book Company. Revenues were just a bit over $.5 billion in 2008.
Books are sold in a myriad of other locations besides bookstores, such as grocery and drugstores, at the airport, and in the big box stores like the aforementioned K-Mart.
